Breast reduction (breast reduction surgery) is a procedure that often goes beyond aesthetic purposes and is classified among reconstructive surgeries, as it provides significant relief from serious physical problems.
It is intended for women with excessively large breasts (macromastia or gigantomastia), which cause disproportionate weight on the body.
Why is Breast Reduction performed? (Benefits)
The reasons why a woman chooses breast reduction are mainly functional:
Relief from pain: The excessive weight places strain on the spine, causing chronic pain in the neck, back, and shoulders.
Improvement of body posture: Many women develop kyphosis due to the weight.
Elimination of skin problems: Deep folds under the breast often cause irritation, chafing, or fungal infections due to moisture and friction.
Improved daily comfort: It allows easier participation in sports and makes it easier to find properly fitting clothing.
Risk reduction: Statistically, the removal of a large portion of breast gland tissue proportionally reduces the likelihood of developing breast cancer in the future.
The Surgical Procedure
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and lasts approximately 2–3 hours. The surgeon removes excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin while simultaneously:
Repositioning the nipple to a higher and more youthful position.
Reducing the size of the nipple (if necessary), so that it is proportional to the new breast size.
Performing a breast lift to create a firmer and more aesthetically pleasing shape.
The Incisions
The incisions usually have the shape of an “anchor” or an “inverted T” (around the nipple, vertically downward, and horizontally along the inframammary fold). Although they are visible initially, they fade significantly over time (6–12 months).
Recovery and Results
Clinic stay: Usually one overnight stay is required.
Pain: Contrary to common belief, postoperative pain is mild and easily managed with standard pain medication.
Work: Return to most daily activities in 7–10 days.
Restrictions: Avoid heavy lifting and intense physical activity for 4–6 weeks.
Support: The use of a special medical support bra is necessary for approximately 1 month.
The result: Patients often describe an immediate feeling of “lightness” and relief from the very first day after surgery.
