Normal subcutaneous fat is evenly distributed over the surface of the body, giving the characteristic shape of the male and female body. Depending on diet, it increases or decreases uniformly throughout the body; for this reason, it is also called functional fat.
What is lipodystrophy:
It is the condition in which fat with different behavior appears in certain areas of the body, thus distorting the appearance of the body, either in a diffuse form or in the well-known “localized fat deposits.” It is mainly a problem affecting women, usually of hereditary origin, and is not substantially affected by changes in body weight (diets, etc.).
Treatment:
In severe cases of lipodystrophy, the fat is permanently removed using the liposuction method. A very small incision is made in the skin, only a few millimeters long, and through this incision the fat is suctioned with a thin metal cannula and with the help of a special pump from the area that has been designated. The small incision is closed with 1–2 sutures. Liposuction is performed under general or local anesthesia. The patient returns home the same day and resumes daily activities after 4–6 days.
Results:
The result of liposuction is visible immediately after the procedure, and the final outcome becomes evident after 3–6 weeks or even months when very large lipodystrophic masses are involved. The skin of the area where liposuction was performed, which is an elastic organ, contracts according to its biological age. The younger the individual, the faster the skin contracts. The best results are achieved with the application of the internationally known superficial liposculpture technique.
